De Pannoniis
The core of the Hungarian spirit is the will to be distinguished from their neighbours and the absolute rejection of being ruled. There are many examples that prove this: when they arrived to the Pannonian Basin every tribe immediately started to form their independent chiefdoms, the nobles forced out of the king in 1222 a royal decree that gave them much more power compared to others in Europe, the rebellions against the Austrians in 1703 and 1848, the first major revolution against the USSR in 1956, and the constant infighting during their 1100 years of known history. Some of this can be explained by their isolated language and culture, but it doesn’t give a reason for the internal differences. Hungarians are perhaps the most egotistically individualistic people in Europe.
The Hungarian despises to be ruled by others, but can’t command himself.
During the Middle Ages foreign travellers described this land as the “closest thing to Paradise on Earth”, the land is rich and easy to defend. In the 11th century they had the most well developed high culture in the region, in the 14th century they were one of richest in gold, in the 1500s they had the best army in Central Europe and were the first to adopt the Renaissance outside of Italy, they had the first underground system in continental Europe, the best literacy rate in central and Eastern Europe, they were the richest of the Eastern Bloc countries.
Despite all of this, rich land, good economy under communism, high IQ compared to neighbours, Hungary faces serious problems.
The gypsy population of Hungary in 1920 was 70.000, today it’s around 900.000 (based on the last census, but realistically it’s probably between 1 million and 1,5 million, many gypsies consider themselves “Magyar”) and it’s estimated that by 2050 there will be more gypsy newborns in Hungary than native Hungarians (due to their incredibly high fertility rate compared to the natives). Their integration has been a major question for centuries and little to no progress has been made. Even if it was successful, two new problems arise: 1. they will integrate a low IQ population to their culture that still will outbreed them, thus Hungary will no longer be Hungarian, or 2. after and during the integration process they integrate the roma not only culturally but biologically too, but in this case the overall genetic makeup of the country will change forever and with it their average IQ will drop significantly. Note that gypsies have an extremely low average IQ, estimated by multiple studies to be around 70.
GDP per capita is one of the lowest among the EU countries, surpassed by even Romania.
The rail network was one of the best in Europe at the end of the millennium, but today it’s outdated and barely functioning.
The education and healthcare systems are in ruins.
I hope you can excuse for the rambling, but I had explain why Hungarians today feel that they’re left behind, despite all the effort and great improvements of the last decade or so.
Naturally Hungarians can blame almost anyone easily. “2/3 of our country was taken away”, “The Russians were here for 40 years”, “Our politicians are corrupt and incompetent”.
Many are blaming the current ruling party, Fidesz, for the problems of the country. Many also believe if they will have their new government everything will change: Hungary will be the Switzerland of Central Europe, the average IQ will increase by 15 points and suddenly the country won’t be full of TV and social media addicted alcoholics. This is stupid.
The problem is simple. Although serfdom has been abolished almost 200 years ago the average Hungarian is still a serf. You see, Hungary never had a civil revolution. You can argue that it’s just the modern state of the goy, but it’s worse than that. You don’t see this type of serf mentality in France, Germany, Austria or the UK. The average Hungarian, regardless of his political views, still believes that the “lords” will take care of it, they know what’s best for him, he just has to be the salt of the Earth and it will be alright.
The supporters of both the Fidesz and Tisza embody it perfectly. Tisza supporters believe Magyar Péter will save the country, they believe with their heart that if he wins everything will change, and it obviously will change for the better. Among Fidesz supporters it’s a common belief that if Fidesz loses the election the country will be in ruins, Hungarian soldiers will be deployed in Ukraine and drag queens will teach gender studies to kids in kindergarten.
It’s nothing surprising. The median age in Hungary is 44, most people currently living there were born during or BEFORE communist occupation. In their eyes the last 20-30 years have been an incredible development. Salaries increased, taxes got lower, families got financial support to build homes and the youth got multiple low interest rate loans to help them buy homes and start businesses.
But somehow these don’t work.
The fertility rate keeps falling and the price of homes only increased with the loans.
There’s an internal frustration in the nation caused by generational differences. Discourse no longer exists, political topics are reduces to screaming about corruption on the left and to fear mongering on the right. Whether these are justified or not is a different topic, the problem is that the nation of Hungary doesn’t have a vision for the future. And at the times they have (which usually mean the next 4 years at best) they don’t have a plan on how to get there.
Nobody in the parliament has any idea about what should be done to prevent the country from becoming the India of Europe in the next 40 years.
The two major parties have important jobs to do if they want to stay relevant and be effective.
Fidesz should approach the youth better. Their wholesome chungus christian nationalism is unsexy and alienates the youth. The majority of their voters will be dead or in a minority in 10-15 years, they have to figure out what to do then.
Tisza is a big question mark. Their leader is the ex husband of one of major Fidesz ministers. They’re likely to become a satellite party of Fidesz. Their most important task is to not be that and also to not be typical euro liberals.
Mi Hazánk does have some interesting ideas, but they’re irrelevant for the next 2-3 elections, and have the same unsexiness problem Fidesz has.
Whichever party wins the election in April I have proposals which they should consider. 1. Hungary has an insane amount of unmined silver & gold that is estimated to worth over 700 billion euros. It could be used to pay off the national dept and create a national trust fund for every Hungarian. 2. Buy the youth. Invest huge amounts of money into increasing the quality of education, create innovative job opportunities. Change the education system in a way that it brings out excellence and gives it support to flourish. It sounds harsh but care less about the problematic and slow kids (maybe create a separate schooling system) and instead of them put in more effort into talented and exceptional children. 3. Make physical fitness sexy. The Hungarian youth is one of the fattest in the world. Create fun fitness programs for middle- and high schoolers. 4. Make better use of the rich soil. Hungary should be exporting grain to neighbouring countries. 5. Urge a Carpathian Cooperation in which countries in the region would help out each others industries. Hungary is not the best in everything, but the joint effort of maybe Hungary, Slovakia, Czech, Austria and Romania could achieve incredible things.
The present is foggy but there are great opportunities for the future -the most important thing is that action has to be taken before everything is lost.

Very informative. Much to learn from. Sadly, I knew very little of this history. Well written. Well done. Welcome to Substack.
